Control on the ground when things get tight
Most confrontations that become truly dangerous end up on the ground sooner or later. This insight has fundamentally changed the world of self-defence, and it is the reason why Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is an integral part of our training. This martial art from Brazil put a revolutionary principle at its centre: with the right technique, a physically weaker person can control a bigger and stronger opponent and escape from dangerous positions.
Sifu Hassan Mahamid took up Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as part of his intensive study of MMA from 2004 onwards. For him, ground fighting was a logical addition to his already broad repertoire. After all, a self-defence system that only works standing up leaves a crucial gap. With the knowledge from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, our training closes exactly this gap and keeps you able to act even if you have lost your footing.
Why ground fighting matters so much
Different rules apply on the ground than when standing. What counts here is not raw strength and fast punches, but position, leverage and a cool head. That is exactly what makes Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu so valuable for people of every build. You learn to stay calm, improve your position and apply a controlled technique at the right moment. This composure under pressure is a skill that has an effect far beyond the mat.
- Confidence on the ground, where many conflicts are actually decided
- Control techniques and joint locks that work even against bigger opponents
- A clear head in tight, stressful situations
- Excellent body awareness, strength endurance and mobility
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in our system
We don’t practise Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as an isolated competitive sport but as an integral part of self-defence. That’s why we consistently link ground techniques with what happens before. How does a fight end up on the ground in the first place? How can you avoid going there if you don’t want to? And once you’re on the ground, how do you get back on your feet safely? This holistic thinking makes our training practical.
For young people and adults alike, ground training is often a real revelation. Many realise for the first time that technical skill can matter more than pure strength. This boosts self-confidence enormously and takes away the fear of exactly those situations that previously seemed most threatening. At the same time, ground fighting trains the whole body in a way that hardly any other discipline can match.
Many people find ground fighting unfamiliar at first, almost something they have to overcome. But this is exactly where a special opportunity lies. By engaging with this range, you gradually lose your fear of exactly those situations that previously seemed most threatening. With every session, your trust in your own abilities grows. You notice that even under pressure you can breathe calmly, think clearly and act deliberately. This mental component is often more valuable than any single technique, because it changes how you feel and move overall.
