The philosophy of Sifu Hassan Mahamid
Technique alone does not make a martial art. Only a well-considered attitude gives movement meaning and depth. For Sifu Hassan Mahamid, philosophy is therefore not an accessory but the foundation of all his work. His thoughts revolve around an image he returns to again and again and that captures the essence of his teaching. It is the image of water, which can be both gentle and immensely powerful.
“In martial arts it is like everywhere else in life. What matters is to yield at certain moments and be soft like blades of grass, and at other moments to be hard and unyielding like a tree trunk.”
These two qualities need to be combined. Water can flow calmly, ripple and drip, adapting itself so that it flows through the narrowest crevices in the rock. Yet it can also unleash incredible, destructive force and strike hard. In Sifu Hassan’s view, a martial artist should always keep this image in mind. Adapting at the right moment and having the right response ready is of fundamental importance. This philosophy also gave rise to the guiding principle of Sifu Hassan Mahamid’s school: “Be fluid.”
Our greatest opponent is ourselves
A central idea of his philosophy may come as a surprise at first. In training we discover ourselves and learn to control our strength and emotions. Because the only and greatest opponent we have is ourselves. Anyone who internalises this understands that martial arts go far beyond physical confrontation. It is about recognising your own weaknesses, working on them and using your own strength responsibly.
A clear ethical line follows from this attitude. We should always use the strength we have to achieve our goals, but never violate the boundaries and personal freedom of others. That is why an unshakeable principle applies at Mahamid Martial Arts: what we learn in training may only be used to protect ourselves or others. This responsibility is taken just as seriously as any technique.
Goals give the path a direction
Another important concern is to be at one with yourself and to walk your path calmly and with composure. Sifu Hassan has no illusions about this. Of course, outside influences affect us, and in some areas we will succumb to them or have to make compromises along the way. What matters is that we are aware of this and nevertheless never lose sight of our goals. Because without goals, he is convinced, we are without direction.
These thoughts lead to the guiding motto that stands above the entire school and is meant to accompany every student:
“Learn what makes you better and helps you reach the goal you have chosen, so that you can broaden your horizons.”
For Sifu Hassan, Mahamid Martial Arts is therefore more than just a martial art. It also describes his outlook on life. It helps all of us to recognise our strengths and weaknesses, explore our limits and go through life with a positive attitude. It is precisely this combination of physical training and inner development that makes the training so valuable.
