The biography of Sifu Hassan Mahamid
Every extraordinary journey begins with a first step. For Sifu Hassan Mahamid, that step led from far away to Germany. He was born in Damascus, the capital of Syria. At the age of ten he came to Germany, a move that means an enormous adjustment for a child. A new language, a new culture, a new home. Even then, however, a quality emerged that still defines him today: a great enthusiasm for movement and sport in general.
This general love of sport soon turned into a very special passion. It was sparked by the many martial arts films of the time, which captivated young Hassan. His greatest idol was, and still is, the martial arts legend Bruce Lee. It was not only the spectacular film scenes that fascinated him, but above all the philosophy of life behind them. Bruce Lee’s thoughts on adaptability, on flowing and on constant self-improvement left a deep mark on Sifu Hassan and have stayed with him throughout his life.
A path through many martial arts
Fuelled by this enthusiasm, Hassan Mahamid began training in martial arts. Unlike many others, he did not stop at a single discipline but explored the whole spectrum. His path led through Taekwondo, Kickboxing and Wing Chun, on to Escrima, MMA and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and all the way to Muay Thai. It is this exceptional versatility that makes his understanding of martial arts so rich and nuanced. He knows the strengths and limitations of each individual discipline from his own experience.
Over time, two arts emerged that captivated him in particular. Wing Chun and Escrima are where he got hooked, as he puts it himself. He still practises both disciplines today, and they make up the largest part of his personal training concept. But he also gained valuable experience in the other areas. In Taekwondo, Muay Thai and Kickboxing he fought several successful bouts and proved his skills in competition.
A journey to Thailand and the search for limits
A special chapter in his biography was MMA free fighting. However, Sifu Hassan did not take this step to prove himself in front of an audience, but above all for himself. He wanted to explore his own limits, and the challenge appealed to him. This honest, almost inquisitive attitude towards himself is typical of him. For him, martial arts have always been a path of self-discovery as well.
To live up to his own standard of authenticity, he later travelled to Thailand for some time. At the Kaewsamrit Gym in Bangkok and the Fairtex Gym in Pattaya, two renowned Muay Thai venues, he learned the techniques and traditions of this martial art directly at its source. This experience gave his training a depth and authenticity that cannot be learned from books.
Today, Sifu Hassan Mahamid passes on all this experience at his own school in Offenbach. The little boy from Damascus who dreamed of Bruce Lee has become an experienced master who now inspires others himself. Would you like to learn from his wealth of experience?
