The art of powerful kicking techniques

Taekwondo-Kick bei Mahamid Martial Arts in Offenbach

Hardly any martial art is as visually impressive as Taekwondo. High, fast and powerful kicks are its trademark and fascinate spectators all over the world. But behind the spectacular surface lies a deep system based on speed, reach and a clear inner attitude. The name Taekwondo can be roughly translated as the way of the foot and the fist, and it is exactly this combination that makes the Korean martial art so valuable for our training.

For Sifu Hassan Mahamid, this is where it all began. In 1984 he set foot in a training hall for the first time: the DTU school of Master Haci Kücüköner. The German Taekwondo Union had existed for just three years at the time, and organised Taekwondo in Germany was still in its infancy. Anyone who started back then learned without video platforms and without shortcuts, purely through repetition and the watchful eye of the teacher. What he learned there about footwork, distance and dynamics still carries him today. The 4th Dan in Taekwondo documents this long path, but more important than the grade is that every class with us still bears the hallmark of those early years.

The strengths of Taekwondo

The focus is on the enormous reach of the legs. A well-placed kick keeps the opponent at a distance before they even get close. It is precisely this ability to stop an attacker early that is worth its weight in gold for self-defence. Add to that the speed with which Taekwondo techniques are executed and a remarkable flexibility that develops almost by itself over time.

How we use Taekwondo

In many traditional schools, the focus is strongly on competition and set forms. We take a different approach. At Mahamid Martial Arts, we take the most effective kicking techniques and adapt them to real situations. A kick doesn’t have to be high to be effective. A targeted low kick to the attacker’s leg is often far more practical than an acrobatic move to the head. It is exactly this realistic thinking that sets our training apart.

In the Fight & Defense System, Taekwondo has a clearly defined task: it covers long range. Where Kickboxing covers medium range, Muay Thai works in the clinch and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu takes hold on the ground, Taekwondo makes sure that you don’t let a conflict get close to you in the first place. This division of roles is no coincidence but the result of decades of experience.

Taekwondo is particularly attractive for children and teenagers because it naturally combines the joy of movement with ambition. They learn to control their bodies and experience a small sense of achievement with every successful kick. Parents tell us again and again that after a few months their children walk taller and have more confidence in themselves. Adults, on the other hand, appreciate the intense conditioning challenge, because training with lots of kicking techniques makes even well-trained athletes break a sweat.

An often underestimated aspect is the effect on posture and general well-being. Anyone who works on their kicking techniques regularly strengthens the entire core, improves balance and develops a finer feel for their own body. Especially at a time when many people spend most of the day sitting, this training is a welcome counterbalance. The combination of stretching, strength and dynamics keeps you mobile and helps prevent tension.

Then there is something that is hard to measure. At the beginning, hardly anyone dares to attempt a head-height kick. That’s exactly why the moment it works for the first time is so valuable. Many of our students describe this moment as a small turning point, because they realise that their own limit was apparently somewhere other than they thought. This experience carries over into other areas of life, and it is one of the reasons why Taekwondo is far more than a collection of spectacular techniques.
